Best travel credit cards if you spend $3,000 a month

If you spend $3,000 a month ($36,000 a year) in the same mix as our sample profile, the Amex Platinum Card has the highest first-year value on our numbers, $3,210 with its welcome bonus, and the Capital One Venture X has the highest value each year after that, $1,329 a year after its $395 annual fee. The first-year figure for the Amex Platinum Card (175,000 points) assumes the maximum “as high as” welcome offer; American Express says your offer may be lower. Both figures count only each card’s “easy” credits and value points at the median of published valuations; data last updated October 29, 2026.

Top 10 by first-year value at $3,000 a month

First-year value = welcome bonus (if this spending reaches the minimum in time) + a year of earning + annual bonus points that arrive in year one + easy credits − the first-year annual fee. Anniversary bonuses arrive after the first year, so they aren’t in this figure: the Capital One Venture X’s 10,000 miles (marked “from year 2”) count only in Year 2+ value.

Assumptions behind these numbers

Everything on this page is computed when the site is built, by the same engine and data as the calculator, with the calculator’s default settings. Nothing here is a rating or a recommendation.

Spending mix

Our sample profile’s split between categories, scaled to $3,000 a month (whole dollars per category; any rounding goes to “Everything else”). No favorite airline, hotel chain or cruise line is picked, so co-brand cards don’t earn their own-brand bonus rate on flights, hotels or cruises.

Welcome bonuses

  • Included in first-year value only if $3,000 a month × the offer window reaches the minimum spend (not reached at this budget for 3 cards: Amex Business Platinum Card, Amex Business Gold Card, Capital One Venture X Business).
  • Valued at the headline offer × the median point value, plus any stated extras (statement credit, Bilt Cash at 100¢ per $1, free nights at the points cap × median value, or $150 a night where no cap is stated). Extra spend tiers count only if this spending reaches them.
  • “As high as” offers (Amex) are counted at the full amount, as the calculator does by default; Amex says your offer may be lower.
  • Year 2+ value never includes a welcome bonus.

Credits and perks

  • Only each card’s “easy” credits are counted, at 100% of the face value the issuer states: broad, flexible or automatic ones (general travel credits, broad travel-portal credits, any-airline fee credits, automatic own-airline credits, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck at a quarter a year, small automatic credits, anniversary free nights). Merchant-specific and portal- or property-tied credits are not counted. How credits are counted.
  • Credits marked “year 1 only” count only in first-year value; “from year 2” credits only in Year 2+ value; credits that need a yearly spend threshold count only if $36,000 a year reaches it.
  • Perks such as lounge access, status, free bags, companion certificates and insurance are not given a dollar value.

What else is included

  • Business cards are included (as in the calculator’s default) and tagged “Biz”.
  • Every card in our database is ranked (57 cards). 2 cards we couldn’t verify on the issuer’s page are left out: American Express® Green Card; AAdvantage® Aviator® Red World Elite Mastercard® (Barclays).
  • Values compare each card with having no card. Interest, foreign transaction fees and APRs are not counted: points only pay off if you pay in full every month.
